The Grant Strate Endowment Fund

Grant Strate by Chris Randle

Grant Strate was a pioneer and visionary, a longstanding member of the dance community, philanthropist, choreographer, mentor, and supporter of young dance artists. He bestowed upon The Dance Centre a tremendous legacy through the Grant Strate Endowment Fund. Grant was one of the visionaries behind the project we know today as Scotiabank Dance Centre.

Friends and supporters of Grant celebrated his legacy through the Grant Strate Legacy Celebration on April 28, 2016 in the Faris Family Studio of Scotiabank Dance Centre.  A special evening with tribute performances honoured the life and legacy of Grant included an announcement about the Grant Strate Endowment Fund.

As Grant passed away in 2015 he left The Dance Centre a legacy the organization continues to build upon with the generous support of Canadian Heritage and our partner Vancouver Foundation, along with generous supporters of the Grant Strate Endowment Fund. Held with the Vancouver Foundation, the Grant Strate Endowment Fund received matching support from Canadian Heritage in April 2016 in the amount of $214,890. We are proud to announce that the Fund has now reached $1,013,000. The Grant Strate Endowment Fund provides much needed support to The Dance Centre annually for dance artists through subsidized studio space and professional development opportunities, program areas close to Grant’s heart, along with much-needed equipment for and maintenance of Scotiabank Dance Centre. We are honoured and inspired by the legacy Grant Strate left The Dance Centre, enabling us to support our diverse dance community.

Lola MacLaughlin Endowment Fund and Award

Lola MacLaughlin by Nick Seiflow

The Lola MacLaughlin Memorial Fund and Award were established in 2009 to honour the achievements and memory of the much-loved choreographer and Artistic Director Lola MacLaughlin. The Lola Award is designed to encourage and facilitate the work of senior and mid-career choreographers.

Lola's friends and colleagues have generously contributed to the Lola MacLaughlin Memorial Fund as a way of honouring Lola and her achievements while fostering the careers of dance choreographers. We wish to thank everyone who has supported the growth of the Fund so far. We are pleased Canadian Heritage has generously matched funds raised towards the Lola MacLaughlin Memorial Fund held at the Vancouver Foundation. We are proud to announce that the Fund has now reached $195,000 thanks to generous supporters of the Fund - Tony Giacinti, Lola's friends, and Heritage Canada's Endowment Incentives Component of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund.

Tony Giacinti and The Dance Centre have ambitious goals to further increase the size of the Fund to ensure its greater capacity to foster the growth of senior and mid-career choreographers.
