Each fall The Dance Centre issues a call for submissions for the following season’s programs, which include residencies, research labs, Dance In Vancouver, and more! The deadline for 2014-15 is coming up on November 10: here are the answers to some frequently asked questions, for artists who are still thinking about applying.
Q: Who can apply for Dance Centre programs?
A: To be eligible for most programs, you must be a Dance Centre member. However for some community-oriented programs such as International Dance Day, membership may not be required: see the guidelines for specific details. There is a simple on-line application form.
Q: Can I apply for more than one program?
A: Yes. However bear in mind that in order to support as broad a range of artists as possible, an artist or company is usually accepted for only one of those programs in a given season.
Q: What are the chances of success?
A: It depends on how many apply in a given year, and how closely you fit the program criteria. Generally we endeavour to support as many artists as possible through our programs. Some major programs, such as Artist-in-Residence, may also require you to have funding from another source confirmed in order to proceed.
Q: If I am selected for a program this time, can I still apply the following season?
A: In general, yes. However please note that you would not be in the same program two years running. An artist might for example do a DanceLab one season, and a residency the next.
Q: Any other tips?
A: Read the guidelines! We know, this is really obvious, but every season we receive some submissions which fall outside the specified season dates, or don’t fit the basic criteria. So please read the guidelines carefully or look at our website to see what kinds of projects are happening this season to get a better sense of the focus of a program. If in any doubt, contact our Programming Coordinator (604.606.6405) to ask for clarification.
