Filling the "empty swimming pool"

Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg + Silvia Gribaudi/Wendy D Photography

Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, Artistic Director of Tara Cheyenne Performance, introduces empty.swimming.pool – a new collaboration with Italy’s Silvia Gribaudi which premieres February 16-18, presented by The Dance Centre and the Chutzpah! Festival.

Silvia Gribaudi and I met for the first time in 2012 in Edinburgh. Almost 5 years later we have worked together in 4 cities on two continents. We are so similar and incredibly different. In the working we find intersections of commonality and points of pure confusion with the other. Yet we see ourselves in the mirror.

Silvia and I have the pleasure of having Justine A Chambers with us as our dramaturg/director/adult supervision. The woman is smart! It's hard making performance. Justine makes it possible for Silvia and me to see what we are making, in a way. She is another mirror. What we are making is something neither one of us would make on our own. It is true collaboration, it is hard, strange, and magic. Like mixing a bunch of colours thinking you'll get browny black but instead you get pink sequins.

Language is also interesting. Silvia speaks very good English and I want to speak Italian but I speak bad Spanish instead. Just hearing her lovely Italian accent makes me start speaking Spanish. She is patient with me and frankly it's fun mixing English, Italian and Spanish. There is a fluidity in how we figure out what we "mean".  It usually comes back to movement, the body, or we turn to Justine to who says something clever and true, then we get cappuccinos.

The show is about breaking down barriers to communication through comedy, seeing yourself mirrored in the other, and discovering the power of presence.

How do we cultivate the patience to really know the other?

How much of ourselves do we see reflected back to us? And how are we changed by this?

How fluid is the self?

Are you sure you're being yourself? Really? Really?
